The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera

Honoring the Past "It'll be our job to remember the parts we got wrong and make it better for our children and grandchildren. Embrace our differences, and still find a way to make peace."  p110 "Never be ashamed of where you come from, or the stories your ancestors bring to you. Make them your own."  p122 What the Collective doesn't understand is by honoring the past, our ancestors, our cultures-- and remembering our mistakes-- we become better. p258

Patron Saints of Nothing by Randy Ribay

Lincoln 2021 Books U.S. versus other countries South Korea- p65 It's awkwardly formal compared to back home, where we usually all eat at different times, typically while in front of the TV or a book or our phones. Loneliness and noise. The American way. p92 Marcos is widely regarded by the world as a brutal dictator, continuing to stay in power after the end of his presidential term by declaring martial law. p147 It strikes me that I cannot claim this country's serene coves and sun-soaked beaches without also claiming its poverty, its problems, its history. To say that any aspect of it is part of me is to say that all of it is part of me. p227 Discussion I met one old woman who had been doing this every week for the last forty-eight years. even if God does not exist, this woman has been doing good in His name so maybe it does not really matter. p88 She hesitates, then adds, "Maybe you haven't developed a passion yet because you've spent your entire ...

Broken Throne by Victoria Aveyard

Note- Since this is part of a series, there may be spoilers for the SERIES, even if they are not spoilers for this BOOK. World-building There are lands across the ocean that no longer exist, now either frozen over or sand swept, flattened by the wrath of a few and the ignorance of the many. p8 bombs discussion- note on p 8 weather/ catastrophe p9 I am particularly concerned by man-made climate change, an easy trap to fall into, especially for advancing societies. p11 How could servants create such beauty and still be considered inferior? They are capable of wonders different from our own. p64 Because the war is not a war at all. It is an extermination. p108-109 Silvers aren't used to being denied anything, and they don't react well to hardship. p225 Shade Some texts vary in quality of preservation, and to my surprise and chagrin, many seem to disagree on the severity or magnitude of events, particularly those regarding climate.  p10 "And fewer Silve...

The Witness Wore Red by Rebecca Musser with Bridget Cook

Education man landing on the moon-- considered fake My dad was selling stuff to Morton Thiokol for their solid rocket boosters for the space shuttle! There was such a thing as men landing on the moon! p24 "library" at their school p24-25 While educators had worked diligently to put these packets together, their own knowledge of the outside world was dangerously limited. Kristin was two weeks shy of eighteen, but I could tell it would take at least another two years of study to get her GED. p237 Family It was often the case that when a father's life became too packed full of the demands of multiple wives and many children, the sons took his place in labors of love and emotional support. After all, a man can have countless wives, but he will only ever have one blood mother. p31 Beliefs "Like Brigham Young, I don't like whiny women! Just like him, I tell 'em, 'Leave! I'll replace you in an instant with another wife, and she will serve m...

_Obsidio_ by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

A quick plug-- I love this series so much. If you have not read the Illuminae Files , you should.  As before, I do not edit out cursing so that you can choose to do that yourself. This book series censors itself, very tongue in cheek. I do not know how to add boxes in the way that they do, so I simply put some asterisks.  I will attempt to avoid spoilers, but be warned. Sacrifice Can you imagine that? Sacrificing yourself like that? When you look down the barrel at your ending, will you be able to smile at it the way this guy does? I can't imagine what's going through his head. The needs of the many, maybe? Thinking he'll see his family soon? I dunno. p107 Obsidio by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff Yearbook, anyone? I read this and laughed, not only because it's a joke, but because I figure my journalism kids would understand it.... the fake Latin used is the like... "standard"? fake Latin. NikM: lorem ipsum maximus butticus Pauchok: ... wait t...
