World Building

The sixth and final fight of his contract would determine whether he landed a new deal or found himself on the next flight back to Earth, relegated to fighting in orbital dives reeking of pot, where the vacuum plumbing regularly gave out and big bubbles of pee floated in the bathrooms. p4 Zeroboxer by Fonda Lee

The zero gravity complex, recently renamed the Virgin Galactic Center, loomed ahead of them. p9 Zeroboxer by Fonda Lee

After a couple seconds, he said, "Connection's good," and one of the screens above flickered and shifted into the view from Carr's optic cameras, now being fed live to his subscribers. p 20 Zeroboxer by Fonda Lee

Who in this part of the world still had a defunct genetic disease like asthma? Only people with parents too poor to afford even the most basic gene therapy but irresponsible enough to have kids anyways. Low, even by the standards of their neighborhood. School boys would go after such a glaring mark of weakness like hyenas after a lame zebra. p38 Zeroboxer by Fonda Lee

After they'd celebrated the new contract with a trip to Bubbity's all-you-can-eat-buffet (where You're Not Gaining Weight If You're In Space!)... p41 Zeroboxer by Fonda Lee

The Dr. Drew Ming Athletic Mall on Surya was even larger than Valtego's Virgin Galactic Center. Risha told him it was named after one of Mars' visionary geneticists. Martians, she said, named things after scientists the way Terrans used war heroes and politicians. p262 Zeroboxer by Fonda Lee

Taking social media to the extreme

"What's more, your genetic profile should appeal to a very large pool of consumers and sponsors." p48 Zeroboxer by Fonda Lee

p216-- I feel it's harder to avoid spoilers in this book than a lot of the others I've done so far. Especially because a lot of the things I saved relate to important plot points. So I do have a lot more page number and chapter suggestions this time than specific quotes in an effort to keep spoilers out of here.

Martian/ Terran Differences
Weird category to include, right? But it's something we can use to talk about how the prejudices develop between the worlds. Are humans always going to find ways to hate each other? How does this mimic the ways our prejudices already exist? etc

p75 has a bit about the history of genetics between Martians and Terrans and also the different ways in which each group is taught about the other

p206 has a protest that could be interesting to discuss

ch 16 has a protest, fight, and then interview regarding this issue

"Terraforming is enshrined in the Constitution of the Martian Settlements. Pro- and anti-terraformist politicians are constantly arguing about it. It's been going on since before my grandparents were born, and it'll probably still be going on after we're dead. But whatever Mars becomes, it won't be like Earth. It'll be its own thing." p261 Zeroboxer by Fonda Lee

Agree/ Disagree Discussion Topics

"You looked confident, you paid attention, you were serious but funny, and you didn't act like a prima donna or a jerk. Do you have any idea how rare that is for a sports celebrity?" p104 Zeroboxer by Fonda Lee

You can also use this book to help students discuss  nature/ nurture. Chapter 10 can be especially good for that, I think.

And you can use it for discussing the idea of genetic modification in humans in general. For instance, how Carr chooses to help Enzo and the foundation created to help other kids with "genetic deficiencies." See chapter 15.

For as much as people feared the specter of enhancement, the threat of superhumans, the terrible consequences of breeding mankind, they desired and celebrated the extraordinary. p270 Zeroboxer by Fonda Lee

#relateable

"I don't fit in anywhere, I never have. So the idea that a person can shape their own identity, that you can show yourself to the world in a certain way and stand for what you want to... I guess it fascinates me." p211 Zeroboxer by Fonda Lee

**Any mistakes in the quotes are my own. If you notice any, let me know and I'll fix them.**
