Nevernight by Jay Kristoff
This is an adult book written by an author who also writes YA. The quotes may reflect this difference.
So it's apparently Kristoff whose love of footnotes we also see in Illuninae Files. He has a ton of amazing footnotes in this series, too.
some of my favorites- p19 "The Brightest Light" book burning story
p119- the language of cats
p125 books
p186 sunglasses being blasphemous
p188 sex joke tavern name
p230 dueling story
p246 freedom of speech
p324 re: Pip and his blade
All the snark
"I called you nothing, sir. And I'll thank you not to call me 'girl' again, as if the word were kin to something you found on the bottom of your boot." p44
those eyes were as blind as a boy in love p126
"It may not be right," Aalea said. "It may not be just. But this is a word of senators and consuls and Luminatii-- of republics and cults and institutions built and maintained almost entirely by men. And in it, love is a weapon. Sex is a weapon. Your eyes? Your body? Your smile?" She shrugged. "Weapons." p159
Hers was a subtle craft requiring personal attention, and large groups of teenagers in the same room seldom proved conducive to lessons in the finer arts of seduction. p177
"You want a break, Corvere?"
"My thanks, love. Your jaw would do nicely." p209
"though i have no face, believe me when i say i am scowling the pants off you right now"
...
"of course, a state of pantslessness seems to be your goal..." p212
"Now. Go to sleep, children." p215
"I'm aware that the razor-tongued princess of smart-arsery act is just your natural defense techniques kicking in, but I should point out I am in here helping you." p238
"And is it the fourteen-year-old part, or the girl part that troubles you?" p245
"...i think you had best visit the weaver after the boy..."
...
"... your brain and ovaries seem to have switched places..." p286
"but i also doubt that the masters of a school of deadly assassins can get too upset that one of their students actually turned out to be a deadly assassin" p300
Wisdom
"Your mind will serve you better than any trinket under the suns," she'd said. "It is a weapon, Mia. And like any weapon, you need practice to be any good at it." p61
"Beauty you're born with, but brains you earn." p61
"The Light is full of lies, Acolyte. The Suns serve only to blind us." p96
"A traitor's just a patriot on the wrong side of winning." p107
If you can't hurt the ones who hurt you, sometimes hurting anyone will do. p210 (Certainly not wisdom to live by, but something to understand.)
"It was never who I was."
...
"It was just who they made me." p278
???
"Well, that's my point. Names speak to the namer as much as the named. Maybe I don't want folks knowing who I am. Maybe I like being underestimated." p57
"The books we love, they love us back. And just as we mark our places in the pages, those pages leave their marks on us. I can see it in you, sure as I see it in me. You're a daughter of words. A girl with a story to tell." p243
For adults
an interesting discussion on the "c" word on p 60
Description
Her stomach almost ached to see the woman in full light. To call her pretty was to call the typhoon a summer breeze, or the three suns a candle flame. Aalea was simply beautiful; painfully, stupidly beautiful. p156
